In the right hand of Zeus, there is a lightning bolt. This is because Zeus is the god of lightning. Zeus was given the thunderbolt as a thank-you. Zeus headed to Tartarus after releasing his siblings and killed Campe and gave freedom to the Cyclops. The Cyclops was extremely pleased; therefore he gave Zeus the thunderbolt. In the left corner, there is an Eagle flying through. The eagle was his messenger and companion, thus Zeus was associated with the eagle. The eagle was once said to be a mortal king named Periphas. Periphas was highly worshipped which angered Zeus. Zeus would have struck him with his thunderbolt but Apollo transformed the king into an eagle and set him aside the throne of Zeus. It is also said that the eagle was adopted by Zeus when he appeared to him before the Titan War began. Zeus also appears to be above the clouds in the painting. This is because he is known as the Lord of the Sky and the ruler of Mt. Olympus. (Citations: http://www.theoi.com/Ther/AetosDios.html and www.read-legends-and-myths.com |
